Flatfoot can cause a number of problems, some of which are:
Treatment of flatfoot usually involves surgical intervention where an orthopedic surgeon fuses certain joints. The use of internal screws and plates is a common place. The recovery period may last up to 6 months and a leg cast is usually necessary.
Owing to latest research and development in Foot & Ankle Surgery, a metallic device is implanted in one of the foot joints, which causes flatfoot deformity. As a result, the arch is restored and the joints take a normal position. This is done thru a surgical opening of about one centimeter. The operation is monitored with live video x-ray. The healing time is also greatly reduced to about one week, after which the patient can walk and slowly start living normal life.
This operation may not work for those with a rigid flatfoot that is not reducible. As about the best time for this operation, it is between the age of 8 to 12 years old.
